INTRODUCTION
As Nigeria’s capital and a melting pot of cultures, Abuja stands as a symbol of unity in diversity. Despite its growing urban structure, the city still lacks a sufficient number of accessible creative hubs and cultural institutions that celebrate indigenous arts and promote inclusive artistic experiences.
This proposal presents a unique opportunity to transform an existing, underutilized underground pedestrian tunnel into Africa’s first Underground Walk-By Art Gallery—a landmark cultural space where art, music, poetry, and community intersect in a vibrant public setting.
LOCATION
The proposed site is the underground tunnel located at Area 11, Garki, connecting the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) headquarters with the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) office complex. The tunnel boasts ample space with distinct sections and wings, complemented by a well-designed green area above it. The location also includes existing conveniences that can support foot traffic and event programming.
